White Watercolor

My pattern designs usually begin with a single motif. Made this watercolored orchid for a friend's wedding.

When I paint white florals, I actually use the white of the paper for the highlights, and then add midtones and shadows using light mixtures. For this orchid, I used Davy's Gray from Winsor & Newton, which is actually one my favorite mixing grays (to desaturate colors).

I colored in my sketch using a #6 round brush. Did about 2-3 layers of light washes, until I was happy with the grays. It takes a lot of patience to let each layer dry, before adding on the next layer to build up on color. If you keep adding color while it's still wet, the petals will end up looking muddy. And with white florals, you have to be extremely careful about this.

After all the layers, I added details using a 5/0 rigger brush.

Scanned my artwork, and then turned it into an all-over pattern. :)

Took a daytrip to the nearby beaches and during a quick thunderstorm, I whipped out my watercolors and decided to paint a new pattern.

Happy Thanksgiving! :)

Since we live in a tropical country, I'm celebrating this holiday with an Apple Pie Smoothie from Hillside Cafe! :P Happy Thanksgiving to all those celebrating it! :)

LovEmHearts Painting at Glorietta

I live for creative challenges. Each one is an opportunity to learn, to know myself better, and to grow as an artist. Glorietta asked me to come up with a holiday theme for the heart mural that I first painted back early this year for Valentine's Day.

Next to me painting is fellow artist Mercedes Olondriz. We were lucky to have Joanne Fugoso-Pajarillo shooting our work progress that week! She was the one who snapped these images of us working on our hearts.

If you follow me on Instagram, you'll see that I've been experimenting with a slightly different style of watercolor. I've been integrating pattern-fills in my botanical shapes, and layering them on top of each other.

On our recent trip to Siargao, I sketched the different flowers and leaves that I saw around our resort. Then I used those sketches as my reference to paint a patterned bouquet composed of lilies and tropical leaves monstera, banana, and palm.

I decided to use this motif for my Holiday Heart. I changed the color scheme, and then turned it into an all-over pattern.

I used Liquitex paint and markers for the entire heart mural. These made painting really easy. And I love that my hand-drawn strokes can be seen!

Liquitex materials are available at IFEX Fine Arts.

On the first day, I sketched the design, and worked 'til evening on underpainting colors.

The next day, I began to add the patterns inside the shapes.

My Daily Progress Shot :P

Then finally, on the last day, I added splashes of patterns all over the heart.

My holiday heart is a TROPICAL WONDERLAND! :)
And after 14+ hours of painting, it's finally done!!!

Calligraphy for Tiffany&Co

When Tiffany&Co asks, "Will You?", there is no answer other than

The two-day event was a collaboration between Rustan's Tiffany&Co and Raffles Hotel Makati, in celebration of the Tiffany setting's 130th year.

Hello there, yellow diamond! ðŸ˜

Rustan's Flower Shop set up a flower bar at the event. Super love this idea! Guests at the event were invited to select the flowers they wanted for their custom bouquets.

Love these all-white arrangements!

At the event, I did live calligraphy for all the guests.

They chose from four different design motifs, which I designed on custom Tiffany notecards.

Also did the calligraphy for the place cards, table names, and menu.

It was such a privilege to collaborate with this brand!! I was so happy that they were open to my non-traditional calligraphy and floral sketches! :P

Macramé Workshop at R2R

I gave a quick macramé lesson to the R2R team and artisans. Quick, because I was teaching artisans, and since they are already so adept in their craft and used to working with their hands, the lesson part went really fast. :P

We practiced the different knots and hitches, and then I let them work on their wall hangings.

Excited to see what they produce with this new skill!

It's no secret that I give out free craft workshops occasionally. Sharing what I know really is a passion, and I love being able to equip others with new skills that they can profit from.

If you know of or work with an NGO or foundation and would like to organize a craft class for them, do send me your proposal at workshops [at] lifeafterbreakfast [dot] ph, and let's see how we can work together. :)

Design Week - October 2016

This has got to be the best week of my year (so far) :)

I celebrated my birthday (and this blog's 5th anniv) with a Pattern & Print wall collage exhibit and LifeAfterBreakfast Blank Slate sketch pads at Design Week Philippines' Creative Marketplace!

I had a little pop-up shop where we sold the Blank Slate pads and some wrapping paper with my floral patterns. This exhibit was in partnership with International Fine Paper Exchange (IFEX), which is my go-to source for quality specialty papers. I use their papers for my calligraphy and watercolor workshops, and for all the wedding invitations that I design as well.

My exhibit space was styled by Love and Jamie, the awesome duo of Flora and Fern PH

Love helped me during the entire planning process, and Jamie was there to do the actual styling. Even with last minute changes in the venue, we easily worked together because of their taste, and their amazing eye(s) for detail. It also is a huge advantage for them that they are photographers, so they really know how to make your spaces photogenic!

Jamie adds leafy elements to my wall collage :)

Just to prove how amazing they are, here's a before-and-after look: At the evening before the exhibit opening, we left the display table for registration/business cards like this.
Since the event was to run for 3 days, Jamie wanted to bring in fresh flowers early on the first morning of the exhibit.

When I came in the next morning, Jamie had already set it up, and it looked like this:

Jaw-droppingly amaaazing.

Sooo beautiful with all the pinks, greens, and copper details to match the LifeAfterBreakfast BLANK SLATE sketching and calligraphy pad.

The LifeAfterBreakfast x IFEX Blank Slate pads are now available at select National Bookstore, SM Stationery, and FullyBooked branches! 25sheets of 300gsm smooth black paper perfect for calligraphy, painting, and sketching. It also comes with a script and floral sketching guide! The A4 pad retails for P299 and the A5 sized pad retails for P199.

Many thanks to IFEX PH, especially to Carmela for overseeing this project, and for being with me at the exhibit with Jenny; to Kathryn for helping me plan the booth's set-up and for being there at the exhibit as well; and to Ms. Nancy for the trust and support!:)

It was my birthday on the Design Week's opening day, and I celebrated with a Floral Sketching Workshop and an intimate media launch.

Floral Doodles by Clare and Macy.

Signetura created copper wire bracelets inspired by my floral doodles, and we gave them out as giveaways to the guests. These will make such thoughtful presents for the coming holidays. You can order your custom accessories from them at :)

Thanks to Jamie @adashofjamie for these beautiful photos of the exhibit, and of course, for the gorgeous Protea bouquet!!!

Patty & Theo, Muffin & Toby :)

Last Saturday, we closed the Design Week Creative Marketplace weekend with an afternoon of Creative MBA talks at HallONE.

PJ Lanot (my husband!) kicked it off with his talk Maximizing Opportunities

Francis Miranda gave really important and useful tips about being in charge of your own freelancing life in his talk entitled I, CEO.

I shared how I get inspiration from my trips around the country, and hope for a creative nation to give back to the motherland in Creatives For Country.

Fozzy Castro-Dayrit speaks to an eager crowd at the break-out session with her talk, Studying to be Yourself.

Mikko Sumulong and Atty. BJ Palattao gave a tandem talk on Design Licensing: how to get your work out there, and how to protect yourself and your work.

Special thanks to my sister Aia and Hannah for handling registration!:)

Earlier in the week, I also taught a couple of Calligraphy workshops at Design Week Creative Environment: Intramuros, which was organized by the Design Center of the Philippines.

We had brush and pointed pen sessions at the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) building.

And as if all of this isn't amazing enough, my birthday week was capped off by with a feature on their Creative Space! ☺.♡.❤.♥.⚘.❀.❃.♥.❤.♡.☺ OMG I'm so kilig like a teen na crush rin pala ng crush niya!!! Hahaha!:P

Grateful to everyone who attended the Creative MBA, dropped by the exhibit at DesignWeek, and joined the workshops! :)
