Swap x Type

SWAP x TYPE is a collaboration project featuring 30 type and calligraphy artists in the Philippines, all celebrating the beauty of handmade letters to inspire your every day. It's such a great honor for me to be part of this project!

We were tasked to design something that inspires us. It's no secret that I'm a morning person, so of course I wanted to highlight my favorite part of the day!:P I'm an early sleeper and an early riser--- I wake up at 5:30-6am every day, then start with some breakfast. I love breakfast so much that PJ and I even had a breakfast wedding. (He's not a morning person, so I'm grateful that he made my dream wedding come true :P). We always start each day with "Good Morning, Love", and this is what inspired me to use it for my Swap Watch design. :)

What gets you up in the morning? Whether it is your work, your favorite person, your family, your passions, or even just a good plate of breakfast, I hope this watch inspires you to have those reasons to wake up happily everyday. :)

My Good Morning watercolored typography design comes in 3 strap colors: white, navy, and teal

Sunday7: Sweet September

Our favourite verse is also our wifi's name at home. Haha :P Reminds us to always be grateful for what we have, for the good and the bad, for the big and the small.

Absolutely loved this interview of Mansy and me by our good friend Macy. You can read it on spot.ph. Mansy and I always joke that our photoshoots together look like prenups! :P Thanks, Macy, for allowing us to share our thoughts, stories, and dreams about crafting. Thank you also to Bride and Breakfast for including me in their list of awesome calligraphers!

I've already taught 9 workshops this month and we're not yet done with September! It's been fun, but I CANNOT wait til October (my fave month!).  Next month, I'll be celebrating LifeAfterBreakfast's birthday! I'll be having a Stamp Swap on Oct 3 at the Katipunan Art Festival, crafting by the beach in La Union at Craft Camp on October 17-18, and I'm also planning a few by-invite-only workshops for students who have already taken the previous classes. Super excited for all the upcoming events!

My current fave at Pipino: the banana choco peanut vegan cupcake. I made this recipe years ago, and so happy that my amazing staff at Pipino have perfected it-- I think it's even better now than before! :P Super moist and with just the right amount of sweetness. There are fresh banana chunks in the cupcake batter, topped with peanut butter choco flavored frosting using unwashed sugar that we grind ourselves. Making a mental note to add this to my Christmas gifting list!

New flipflops from Havaianas, yay! This wobbly, hand-drawn pattern is ♥.

Gifted myself with a layered set from the L'Indochine x HeyJow jewelry collection. You can check out the beautiful designs in the L'Indochine stores in SM Megamall & SM Aura. You can mix and match 3 pieces in this set: choose 1 short pendant necklace, 1 stone necklace, and 1 tassel necklace.

Was finally able to see The Curious Artisan's pen holders, and feel them in my hand! These are from the new Balustre series, which is inspired by Philippine ancestral homes. I love this Bolo design, which I am now using for some commissioned illustrations that I'm working on. Also eyeing that Dyosa straight holder!

Hope you all have a great week ahead!

Floral Watercolor at Candy Fair 2015

I was at the Candy Fair last Saturday, September 12 at Metrotent for a Mini Botanical Watercolor workshop! It was a busy morning as the tent filled up with Candy girls and Candy cuties, but I was with my crafter friends, Anina, Mansy, Mikko, plus Reese (who I just met that day:P) so we had fun catching up while setting the booths up.

I taught a FREE mini workshop on making floral wreaths. We had very little time, so it was really just a primer class where students got to play with the materials. The participants used Dr. Ph Martins Hydrus Watercolor, and got a free Sakura Waterbrush from Craft Carrot! IFEX also gave away Canson Montval watercolor paper. I also gave away these free mini zines and postcards.

Over at the LifeAfterBreakfast booth, we sold Watercolor supplies, including brushes and paint from Craft Carrot, and paper from IFEXph.

One of the bestsellers were these leather brush holders (that I normally give out with my workshop kits).

I gave out these free Watercolored Tattoos to the first 200 guests of the fair.

(Thanks to Mansy for modelling my temp tat :P)

Thanks to Candy Magazine for allowing us to share our crafts at the Candy Fair! :)

Join the Stamp Swap!

Here's a craft challenge for you: carve 10 stamps and exchange them with other rubberstamp makers and carving addicts!:)

For the 5th Craft Soirée, I'm hosting a STAMP SWAP! There will be lots of goodies and free carving blocks for all participants!:)

Each participant is tasked to create 10 stamps with 10 prints for the swap. At the end of the event, you'll get to take home 10 different stamps made by other awesome artists!

You can choose to create individual rubber stamps, stamp sets, rubbercut or linocut prints, and pair them with art prints, stamped postcards and stationery, stamped ceramics, or stamped fabric.

This event is in partnership with the Katipunan Art Festival.

The Stamp Swap will be held on October 3, 10am-12nn at Ninyo Fusion Cuisine

Succulents & Serifs

The world is always silent once brush touches paper. Painting quiet little serifs is such a relaxing process; it's like nothing else matters more than straightening those lines one tiny brushstroke at a time. I love getting into that zone. Painting things from memory (no typeface guide was used to create this alphabet) is like talking to yourself and meditating. Working without pencils is like daring yourself to make a commitment with every movement. So many things happening to you, challenging you all at once, and yet you try to keep still and own maximum control of the process. This tiny 20/0 brush helps make that process easier; I feel like it just goes where I command it to go, and not anywhere else.

While cleaning my old room last Sunday, I unearthed my vintage Guitar watercolor palette. It's student grade, but I'm amazed at how highly pigmented it still is. The cakes are super dry, too, (they always have been), and I like it that way. I like being able to control the pigment consistency in my washes. Aaaand, I'm in love with the fact that it comes in a tin case. Why don't all watercolor sets come in tins?? Haha :P

I'm so excited for September! I'll be teaching workshops every week, and almost all are already full. There are still a few slots left for the Watercolor Lettering class that's happening this Sunday, September 6 at Hillside Cafe. Click here if you'd like to join that class.

I recently did a video shoot for Bride&Breakfast, where I demonstrated how to make rubberstamps (they'll be posting it this month!). It was awesome because I got to create real material for one of our couple friends getting married this year.

Currently making more of these succulent stamps and floral watercolored tattoos as my FREE giveaways at the Candy Fair! Hope to see you on September 12 at Metrotent (in Metrowalk Ortigas). You can buy tickets to the fair here.

Thanks to Macy for, as always, being the best hand model. :P I just noticed we have semi-matchy flat gold bangles!

At the Candy Fair, I'll be teaching a simple step-by-step for different kinds of Watercolored Succulents. The kit (for workshop use) is only P290--a real special deal for the Candy girls. ;)
